Mary Wadley von Hirschberg


Mary Wadley von Hirschberg was born in Durban, South Africa, during the official visit of the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII).Her parents were officiating as the Mayoral couple at the time. She is a younger sister of Trevor Lloyd Wadley and the ninth child in the family of ten. She graduated from the University of Cape Town with the degrees of B.Com, L.L.B. and later accompanied her husband on postings in the South African Foreign Service in Pretoria, London, Vienna, New York and Tokyo. The New York posting involved seven years at the United Nations. Between overseas postings, in her forties, she served articles in Pretoria and was admitted to the side-bar as an attorney, simultaneously raising three children. After the final posting in Tokyo she fulfilled a lifelong dream and gave lieder concerts in Pretoria. Later she worked as an attorney in Johannesburg. She is presently living in Swaziland.
